Right now Transnet Freight Rail is looking for young South Africans to start a career as a Trainee Train Assistant – a chance to get into rail work while you are still in school or just finished Grade 12.

What the role involves

The Trainee Train Assistant works side‑by‑side with the Train Driver. You will help prepare locomotives, check brakes, set up communication gear and assist with shunting and safety checks. The goal is to make sure freight and passenger trains run safely, on time and in good condition.

Who can apply

  • South African citizen, aged 21 years or older
  • Completed Grade 12 with pure Mathematics and/or Physical Science
  • Height of at least 1.6 m and able to lift heavy objects
  • Good hearing, vision and overall fitness (medical tests will be required)
  • Willing to work shifts and follow safety rules
  • Residence in the Northern Cape is preferred (proof of residence needed)
