The role: 

The role is responsible to ensure legal and best practice compliance to ventilation and occupational hygiene standards, through maintenance of engineering solutions, in underground, opencast, surface plant and general surface areas and giving guidance and assurance to operations. Solutions must be based on relevant occupational exposure standards to eliminate or minimise potential health risks and catastrophic events.  

Responsibilities will include but not limited to: 

  1. Ensure that VOHE legal requirements, standards and policies are adhered according to legal Ventilation, Occupational Hygiene & Codes of Practices.   
  2. Interpret and communicate changes to legislation and policies to ensure legal compliance as well as proactively advise management on the identification of risks and develop mitigation plans. 
  3. Contributes to research, identify, and implement best practices, technologies with in the VOHE risk management.  
  4. Develop Policies and Procedures in accordance with Seriti requirements.  
  5. Develop systems to ensure compliance with the provisions of the MHSA – Section 9. 11. 12.13.14. and Regulations Chapter 5. 16. 21.22 & 23 by conducting inspections, audits, and reports.   
  6. To monitoring, reviewing ensuring compliance and enable proper implementation of health measures to eliminate, control and minimise the risk health and safety in the operations.   
  7. Review required by Section 11(4) of the MHSA, should be reviewed, and updated after every altered circumstance or if significant changes are introduced to procedures, mining, and ventilation layouts.  
  8. Manages or supports ventilation engineering process for the operations. 
  9. Identifies, reports and advise on key ventilation and occupational hygiene risks, opportunities and trends and impact thereof on the operations/projects.  
  10. Act the internal Seriti technical expert on Occupational Hygiene issues.   
  11. Conduct Ventilation and Occupational Hygiene trend analysis, incident investigations, report, and document findings.  
  12. Provides oversight and assurance on group governance.  
  13. Compile, monitor and control the departmental budget so that spending is in line with Seriti requirements.   

Requirements: 

  • B Tech, B Sc, B Eng or National Diploma / Degree Mechanical / Engineering with Chamber of Mines Certificate in Mine Environmental Control – MEC  
  • 7 Years experience in the mining / engineering field with a minimum of 3 years as VOHE Superintendent with relevant and comprehensive Occupational Hygiene experience 
  • Data analysis skills and in-depth knowledge of all relevant legislation pertaining to MHSA  
  • Management Development Programme (MDP) or equivalent 
  • Proficiency in Ventsim Design Software  
  • Project Management  
  • Coaching and Mentoring  
  • Valid driver’s license 
  • In possession or able to obtain a valid Certificate of Fitness

The role:

The role is responsible for the day-to-day implementation of plans to manage Seriti Coal’s Engineering Assets, Resources and Infrastructure – availability of machinery and equipment and managing resources and people to achieve planned production targets.

Responsibilities will include but not limited to:

  • Maintain safe work practices and a safe working environment by ensuring that legal requirements and group working standards and policies related to engineering are implemented and followed on the Operations and Projects
  • Optimise planned maintenance schedules of machinery and equipment ensuring that equipment is effectively maintained
  • Research and implement best practice systems with respect to cost, maintenance, safety and people management
  • Effective People management, ensuring that roles are well defined and clarified and that competencies and learning paths are developed to human capacity and capability
  • Financial Budgeting & Management
  • Participate in ad hoc projects providing input into drafting of scope for new projects
  • Sound knowledge of non-flameproof and flameproof diesel equipment and associated hydraulic/pneumatic components
  • Manage underground diesel dispensing equipment
  • Management of critical spares and sub-assemblies (stock levels/turnaround time and quality of repairs)
  • Structural integrity maintenance management
  • Managing structural/mechanical/hydraulic drawing libraries

Requirements:

  • N4 Technical certificate and recognised Trade Test in the relevant discipline or National Diploma or Engineering Degree
  • Minimum of 4 years’ experience as an appointed 2.9.2 Engineering Foreman
  • Safety & Risk Management Course
  • Knowledge of Relevant Legislation including: The Mine Health and Safety Act, Minerals and Energy Act, Basic Conditions of Employment and Environmental Legislation
  • An in-depth knowledge of technical engineering aspects such as outside equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and South Africa Bureau of Standards (SABS)
  • A good working knowledge and understanding of machinery and equipment used in the Mining industry
  • Aware of best practices and new technologies relating to Engineering Principles and Processes
  • Computer Literacy: MS Office and SAP
  • Valid driver’s license
  • In possession or able to obtain a valid Certificate of Fitness

The role:

The role is responsible for the control and management of the production process to ensure that production targets and qualities are achieved. Ensure that department complies to all relevant policies, procedures and legislative requirements.

Responsibilities will include but not limited to:

  • Management of production on the coal floor ensuring supervising of production personnel and overseeing those jobs are done properly as well as control and coordination of all process contractors onsite
  • Coordinate maintenance of plant machinery in support of production targets through the development of plant maintenance plans with the plant manager and section engineer as well as ensure that all process mobile machinery is maintained as per schedule

  • A good knowledge of legislation relating to the mining industry e.g. Mine Health and Safety Act
  • In depth knowledge of coal processing methodologies
  • Knowledge of the risk assessment process and practices
  • Aware of best practices and new technologies
  • An understanding of the coal production process and stockpile management
  • Computer literacy (Microsoft Office Suite)
  • Valid driver’s license
  • In possession or able to obtain a valid Certificate of Fitness

About Seriti Mine

Seriti operates six large-scale, opencast and underground thermal coal mines, predominately supplying Eskom power stations and is currently developing the New Largo mine in stages to provide additional coal supplies to Seriti’s various coal markets.
