The Judicial Inspectorate for Correctional Services (JICS) is inviting suitably qualified candidates to apply for an Independent Correctional Centre Visitor (ICCV) vacancy at the Van Rhynsdorp Correctional Centre.

This opportunity is available on a 36-month contract under the Directorate: Regional Coordination & Oversight. Applicants only need a Grade 12 or Senior Certificate, although additional requirements relating to community nomination and computer literacy also apply.

About the Independent Correctional Centre Visitor Position

Independent Correctional Centre Visitors play an important role in helping the Judicial Inspectorate for Correctional Services monitor conditions within correctional centres.

The successful candidate will interact with inmates and Department of Correctional Services officials, receive complaints, maintain case records and report matters requiring attention.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must have a Grade 12 or Senior Certificate.

Candidates must also meet the following requirements:

  • Be computer literate.
  • Be able to work accurately.
  • Have a recommendation or nomination as an ICCV from a community organisation.
  • The community organisation recommendation must not be older than six months.
  • Be able to work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Be public spirited.
  • Have sound knowledge of the Batho Pele Principles.
  • Be assertive.
  • Be able to work under pressure.
  • Have good verbal and written communication skills.

valid driver’s licence will be an added advantage.

Preference will be given to suitably qualified applicants who live in communities located near the correctional centre where the vacancy is available.

Duties and Responsibilities

The successful Independent Correctional Centre Visitor will be responsible for carrying out a range of monitoring, administrative and complaint-management duties.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Conducting site visits to the correctional centre.
  • Reporting urgent matters requiring attention.
  • Conducting regular interviews and consultations with inmates.
  • Consulting with Department of Correctional Services officials regarding complaints and mandatory matters.
  • Receiving complaints and requests.
  • Capturing complaints and requests on the relevant database.
  • Opening and maintaining case files.
  • Following up on outstanding complaints.
  • Preparing and submitting monthly reports.
  • Providing statistical analysis of complaints received.
  • Attending to enquiries.
  • Carrying out reasonable instructions from the supervisor or Regional Manager.
