Impala Platinum Refineries is offering an exciting opportunity for aspiring professionals to gain practical experience through its P1 and P2 Work Integrated Learning Programme 2025 in Chemical Engineering (7 positions) and Analytical Chemistry (3 positions). Based in Springs, Gauteng, this programme is designed to help you complete the practical training required for a National Diploma (NQF Level 6) while working in a world-class platinum mining environment.

Programme Overview

This 12-month programme offers hands-on training to fulfill the P1 and P2 practical requirements for a National Diploma in Chemical Engineering or Analytical Chemistry. Participants will work under the guidance of experienced mentors, gaining exposure to real-world operations in the PGM industry.

Available Positions

  • P1 & P2 Work Integrated Learner: Chemical Engineering (7 positions)
  • P1 & P2 Work Integrated Learner: Analytical Chemistry (3 positions)

Key Responsibilities

  • Chemical Engineering:
    • Support day-to-day operations, maintenance, and troubleshooting at process plants.
    • Assist in plant administration, management, and technical projects.
    • Contribute to feasibility studies for mining and processing mineral deposits.
    • Engage in innovative technical and business improvement projects.
  • Analytical Chemistry:
    • Conduct sample analysis in ISO 17025-compliant laboratories.
    • Verify the accuracy of analytical results and support laboratory operations.
    • Perform tasks aligned with university guidelines to meet P1/P2 requirements.

Note: Specific duties will be assigned by your mentor/coach in line with your training institution’s requirements.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Chemical Engineering:
    • Completed all theoretical modules of a National Diploma in Chemical Engineering (NQF Level 6).
    • Strong understanding of basic chemical engineering concepts.
    • Medically fit for Base Metal Refinery (BMR) and/or Precious Metal Refinery (PMR).
  • Analytical Chemistry:
    • Completed all theoretical modules of a National Diploma in Analytical Chemistry (NQF Level 6).
    • Good knowledge of basic chemistry concepts.
    • Medically fit for BMR and/or PMR.
  • Additional Requirements:
    • South African citizen or permanent resident.
    • No prior P1/P2 practical training completed (programme is for experiential learning).
    • Preference given to candidates from designated groups per the Employment Equity Act and Implats’ recruitment policy.
