Firefighter Job Description
As a Junior Firefighter with the Fidelity Group, you will be responsible for responding to fire-related incidents, emergencies, and rescue operations. This role requires the use of firefighting equipment and apparatus to protect lives and property in high-risk situations. Under the guidance and supervision of senior officers, Junior Firefighters will also assist in fire prevention activities, provide basic medical care, and maintain firefighting equipment.
The job is fast-paced, requiring a proactive approach to both emergency and non-emergency situations. Junior Firefighters will engage in training drills, simulation exercises, and physical fitness programs to ensure they are prepared for any incidents.
Key Responsibilities
Junior Firefighters will be responsible for a wide range of duties, including but not limited to:
Responding to fires and emergencies: Participate in firefighting activities, rescue operations, and the control of hazardous materials under the direction of senior officers.
Providing emergency medical care: Resuscitate and treat injured persons as necessary.
Fire prevention and safety duties: Undertake fire protection activities and advise on preventative measures to avoid fire-related incidents.
Operating firefighting equipment: Use various equipment to control and extinguish fires, including mobile and fixed breathing apparatus.
Training and mentorship: Participate in training drills and simulation exercises to hone firefighting skills and improve physical fitness.
Health and safety inspections: Ensure that the environment is safe by conducting inspections and advising on corrective actions.
Record-keeping: Maintain an accurate log of incidents and operations to ensure that proper records are available.
Qualifications and Requirements
To be considered for this role, candidates must meet the following qualifications and competencies:
Minimum education: Grade 12 (Matric) qualification.
Valid driver’s license: Unendorsed and valid vehicle driver’s license is essential.
Physical fitness: Candidates must be medically and physically fit to perform the demanding tasks associated with firefighting.
Firefighting knowledge: A solid understanding of fire prevention, firefighting systems, and the classes and chemistry of fire is required.
Clear criminal record: Candidates must have no criminal history.
Additional experience: Knowledge and experience in hazardous materials (Hazmat) operations are highly advantageous.
EMT and First Aid certification: Candidates should have First Aid certifications (Levels 1 to 3) and be capable of reacting quickly and effectively in emergency situations.
Interpersonal and communication skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills are essential, as the role requires coordination with team members and liaison with clients.
