Salary

The salary for the Immigration Officer positions is:

R280 278 – R330 162 per annum at Salary Level 6.

This is a basic annual salary. The final salary offered will be determined according to applicable Public Service remuneration policies.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Applicants must have an undergraduate qualification at NQF Level 6, recognised by the South African Qualifications Authority, in one of the following fields:

• Law
• Public Management
• Public Administration

• Forensics
• Criminal Justice

Applicants whose qualifications were obtained outside South Africa may be required to provide proof of SAQA evaluation.

Duties and Responsibilities

Successful candidates will be responsible for enforcing South Africa’s immigration laws and supporting the Department of Home Affairs’ inspectorate operations.

Enforce immigration legislation

Immigration Officers will support the effective enforcement of the Immigration Act 13 of 2002, as amended, and other legislation administered by the Department of Home Affairs.

Detect and trace undocumented foreign nationals

Officers will detect, trace and process foreign nationals who are suspected of being in South Africa without valid documentation.

This may include conducting interviews, verifying identities and investigating immigration status.

Conduct inspections

Successful candidates will conduct lawful inspections at workplaces, businesses, residences and other premises.

Inspections may be carried out with or without a warrant where permitted by law.

Investigate immigration offences

Immigration Officers will investigate suspected violations of:

• The Immigration Act
• The Refugees Act
• Departmental legislation
• Other relevant laws and regulations

They will collect information, interview individuals, compile reports and prepare evidence for departmental or court proceedings.

Support arrests and detention processes

Officers may participate in the lawful arrest and detention of undocumented foreign nationals.

• Ensuring that all processes comply with applicable legislation

Process deportations

Successful candidates will assist with the lawful deportation of undocumented foreign nationals to their countries of origin.

• Confirming identities and nationalities

• Escorting individuals when required
• Maintaining deportation records
• Working with foreign missions and law-enforcement agencies

Prepare evidence and court documentation

Immigration Officers may be required to:

• Prepare statements

• Issue admissions of guilt and fines where authorised
• Support prosecutions under departmental legislation
• Assist with cases handled under the Criminal Procedure Act

Participate in joint law-enforcement operations

Monitor immigration cases

Successful candidates will maintain and monitor records of documented and undocumented foreign nationals.

They will track cases, update departmental systems and ensure that each matter is handled according to approved procedures.

Monitor permit compliance

Immigration Officers will check whether foreign nationals are complying with the conditions of their visas, permits or other immigration documents.

Where a person is found to have violated those conditions, officers will follow the appropriate enforcement process.

Support anti-corruption investigations

Officers may provide information, statements and evidence in investigations involving corruption or suspected misconduct relating to immigration services.

Attend training and development programmes

Successful candidates must participate in regular training and professional development.

Training may cover immigration legislation, investigation procedures, evidence management, court processes, deportations and law-enforcement responsibilities.

Manage departmental assets

Immigration Officers will be responsible for safeguarding state property, equipment, vehicles and other assets assigned to them.
