Job Description

RCL Foods is recruiting for a driven, highly energized, and customer-focused Code 10 Driver Salesman within the baking business unit.

The suitable candidate will be responsible for performing tasks/activities associated with the transportation and sales of bread and confectionery. Calling on customers (traders and retail chain stores), taking orders and delivering mainly from vehicle, frequently for cash, and new customer acquisition.

This role will be based in Empangeni and reporting to the Distribution Manager.

This role is a Permanent role.

Minimum Requirements

Education

Grade 12, valid Driver’s License and v a l i d PDP.

Skills

Ability to read, write, understand and communicate in English.

Good numeracy

Experience

Min 2 years driving experience working in FMCG. Experience in delivering

and selling FMCG product for cash to existing and new customers.

General

To maintain a valid Driver’s Licence and v a l i d PDP

Expected to work over weekends and public holidays

Expected to work overtime as required

Expected to be on stand by and to come in to assist in the event of driver

absenteeism.

Duties & Responsibilities

Dress and Vehicle Duties

  1. a) Maintain a clean vehicle to ensure high levels of hygiene standards at all times.
  2. b) Wear and make use of the prescribed PPE clothing and equipment.
  3. c) Ensure driving compartment is clean and safe according to requirements for a work station in terms of

the Occupational Health and Safety Act

  1. d) Checks his vehicle according to the checklist specified by the company
  2. e) Enter any faults onto the checklist.
  3. f) Sign the checklist as acknowledgement of the vehicle condition
  4. g) Faults of a serious nature to be reported to the supervisor and the vehicle to be sent immediately to the

workshop

  1. h) Arrange a replacement vehicle if the repair will take a longer time to repair
  2. i) Adherence to the statutory rules of the road, thereby ensuring the safety of himself, his passengers and

other road user vehicles.

  1. j) Immediately report any theft of vehicle, fuel or equipment or damage to vehicle to the Logistics Manager
  2. k) Immediately report damage to third-party vehicles or property to Logistics Manager
  3. l) Accidents must be handled in terms of the company laid-down procedures for damage, injuries and

death

Stock and Loading

  1. a) Check that the actual stock loaded matches the orders placed.
  2. b) Discrepancies are noted and brought to the immediate attention of the Route Controller
  3. c) Once satisfied that the load is accurate, the driver is to sign acceptance of the stock, i.e., Loading Sheet
  4. d) Check the number of crates on load and sign an acknowledgement of the amount that must be returned
  5. e) Check that the vehicle has been safely loaded to ensure road safety is not compromised
  6. f) Inspect the quality of stock being loaded and report any problems immediately to the relevant authority
  7. g) If no choice but to proceed with the delivery of substandard stock, the customer is to be made aware of this fact

and not force the customer to purchase the goods.

  1. h) Driver to assist with loading as and when required

Van Assistants

  1. a) Driver to take responsibility for and supervise the van assistant
  2. b) Ensure van assistant is present at work, and if not, arrange a replacement through the correct

procedure

  1. c) Ensure the van assistant is presentable and deals with customers appropriately
  2. d) Train and coach the van assistant to ensure he is meeting company standards
  3. e) Report performance problems with the van assistant to the Route Controller/Supervisor
  4. f) Create a harmonious working relationship with the van assistant

Sales and Customers

  1. a) Always be friendly, helpful, and respectful towards customers
  2. b) Look for opportunities to increase daily sales by increasing sales to current customers and by gaining

more customers

  1. c) If a potential new sales area, the driver reports to the supervisor and the sales manager to investigate further
  2. d) Any potential or actual customer losses are to be reported to the supervisor. Every attempt is made to win

Back the customer and supply market info. Be proactive on the route

  1. e) Report any issues that may affect company service levels, such as serious delays, difficult unloading

conditions or other such problems

  1. f) Driver liaises with customers weekly to ensure that customer service levels are maintained and that

Customers are retained on their routes.

  1. g) Driver to implement promotions with customers as and when required.

Deliveries

  1. a) Driver to ensure that the stock delivered to the customer is according to the customer’s order
  2. b) Where sales are being exceeded against orders, the driver is to be aware of stock levels at all times to

Ensure all customers on the route are supplied with their order

Key Responsibilities

  1. c) If sales exceed actual amounts on the truck, arrangements to be made via cell phone for replenishment of

stock, either by means of an alternative vehicle or by returning to the bakery

  1. d) Should further stock not be available, apologize to customers who are short-delivered
  2. e) All customers to receive their order, but where this is not possible, at least some of their order
  3. f) Secure orders for the following day’s delivery and give the orders timeously to the sales department
  4. g) Ensure all crates delivered are recovered and returned to Sunshine Bakery premises on the same day
  5. h) Driver to deliver or collect other items/products to or from customers
  6. i) Collect finished products from other bakeries/drivers and deliver to the customer when there is a

breakdown

  1. j) Transporting personnel, material, and equipment to/from specific locations
  2. k) Perform crate recovery to monitor and minimise crate losses.

Transactional Duties

  1. a) Secure and safeguard cash, paperwork, and company stock. Make use of the vehicle safely at all times
  2. b) Immediately deposit cash in the vehicle safe on receipt of it
  3. c) Be vigilant in regard to counterfeit notes or fraudulent activities
  4. d) Be aware of possible robbery attempts and drivers to take necessary precautions to avoid risk
  5. e) Accurately complete and /or handle transactional documentation. These includ,e but are not limited to

invoices, delivery notes, loading schedules, crate control documents, vehicle log sheet, petrol slips,

vehicle check lists, and other related forms

  1. f) Checking and inserting the relevant information (quantitative/ qualitative) details of activities.
  2. g) Forwarding of all documentation to the relevant personnel/departments for processing and ensuring

All monies and luggage are accounted for

  1. h) Accurate recording of the route data
  2. i) Selling bread at the authorised price.
  3. j) Invoices raised for the delivery quantity to match cash received and other paperwork, such as ‘to pay’ or

‘bread on truck’

  1. k) Cash-ups to be completed by the driver, in the presence of the supervisor, on return from a route
  2. l) Cash to be dropped immediately to minimize company risk
  3. m) All monies or paperwork to balance so that stock sold balances with cash received
  4. n) Driver to sign for shortages within 24 hours
  5. o) Driver to investigate the shortage within the next 24 hours

Product/Service Competitor Analysis

  1. a) Collect competitor sales/customer information
  2. b) Collect competitor product information
  3. c) Obtain competitor products

General

  1. a) Drivers may be required to assist in any aspect of the business from time to time as required. In

particular, drivers may be required to perform the duties of van assistant or loader.

  1. b) Comply with health and safety standards in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act
  2. c) Report any health issues to the supervisor that could affect their ability to drive safely
