About the Department of Health Cleaner Position

The Cleaner will be responsible for maintaining cleanliness, hygiene and safety throughout Bronkhorstspruit District Hospital.

The appointed candidate must be able to complete routine cleaning duties, use cleaning materials and equipment correctly, prevent cross-contamination and follow infection-control standards.

The role also requires the employee to identify and report hazards or defects encountered while cleaning.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • A minimum of Grade 9, ABET Level 4 or an equivalent qualification.
  • No previous work experience is required.
  • Basic reading, writing and communication skills.
  • Good verbal and written communication.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to perform routine cleaning duties.
  • Basic knowledge of cleaning materials and cleaning equipment.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work responsibly.
  • Ability to maintain hygiene and infection-control standards.

Applicants should also be physically capable of performing cleaning duties that may involve standing for long periods, washing floors, vacuuming carpets and moving cleaning equipment.

Duties and Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for the following duties:

Cleaning Hospital Buildings

  • Empty dustbins and dispose of waste correctly.
  • Dust and polish wooden tables and other furniture.
  • Refill water bottles with fresh water where required.
  • Clean hospital windows and walls.
  • Wash and mop floors.
  • Vacuum carpets.
  • Clean offices, passages, waiting areas and other hospital spaces.
  • Maintain a clean and presentable hospital environment.

Cleaning Toilets and Washrooms

  • Clean and disinfect toilets.
  • Perform deep cleaning of toilet facilities.
  • Wash toilet floors.
  • Refill toilet-paper dispensers.
  • Refill handwashing-soap dispensers.
  • Ensure toilets remain clean and ready for use.
  • Report damaged toilets, taps, dispensers or other facilities.

Cleaning Kitchens

  • Wash kitchen floors.
  • Clean kitchen utensils and equipment.
  • Keep kitchen surfaces clean and hygienic.
  • Assist with tea and coffee during meetings, forums and other official gatherings.
  • Clean meeting areas before and after use where required.

Supporting Building Safety

  • Report defects identified while cleaning.
  • Alert staff and visitors about slippery floors and stairs.
  • Use warning signs when floors are wet.
  • Report failed light bulbs to the supervisor.
  • Report locks, doors or other equipment that are not working.
  • Help maintain a safe environment for patients, employees and visitors.

Infection Control and Resource Management

  • Use correct cleaning and waste-handling techniques.
  • Avoid cross-contamination between different hospital areas.
  • Follow infection-prevention and control procedures.
  • Use cleaning products and equipment responsibly.
  • Avoid wasting water, chemicals and other cleaning materials.
  • Protect departmental property and resources.
  • Follow departmental Human Resource policies and practices.

Salary and Benefits

The successful applicant will receive a salary of:

R144 024 per annum plus applicable government employee benefits.
