Minimum Requirements
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
Grade 10 to Grade 12 or an equivalent qualification is required. No previous work experience is needed, making this post suitable for entry-level applicants. However, exposure to the food service industry will be an added advantage.
Candidates must have numeracy and literacy skills, good verbal and written communication skills, and a basic understanding of food safety and hygiene practices within a food service unit. Applicants should also understand the Batho Pele Principles as they apply to patient care and food service delivery.
Successful candidates must be willing to work shifts, weekends and public holidays. Previous EPWP experience will also be considered an advantage.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
The successful candidates will be responsible for supporting food service operations at the hospital. Duties include receiving, storing, preparing, cooking, dishing up and distributing food and snacks to patients on normal and special diets.
Food Service Aids will assist with preparing normal and therapeutic meals, including snacks, while ensuring that food portions meet the required dietary allowances. They will also pack food onto delivery trolleys according to ward requirements.
Other responsibilities include maintaining cleanliness and hygiene in the food service unit, cleaning floors, storage areas, utensils and equipment, handling waste segregation and sanitation, and following the “clean as you work” rule.
Candidates must wear the correct uniform and protective clothing, operate and care for food service equipment, report broken or faulty equipment, and identify possible risks. They may also be rotated to different areas within the food service unit and will be expected to attend work-related training.
The role also requires compliance with the Ideal Hospital Framework, Batho Pele Principles, patient rights, and Infection Prevention and Control standards. Employees may also contribute to managing complaints and patient safety incidents.
