Position Purpose

The Trainee Yard Official programme at Transnet Freight Rail is designed to train candidates to become certified Yard Officials, responsible for safe and efficient rail yard operations. Aimed at Grade 12 holders with computer literacy, the programme includes theoretical and practical training, leading to certification. Trainees receive a market-related stipend (approximately R8,000–R12,000/month) and gain skills to support Transnet’s freight operations across various depots.

Key Responsibilities

  • Attend and complete theoretical training modules within the specified timeframe.
  • Participate in and complete practical training to develop yard operation skills.
  • Develop competency to operate equipment and perform assigned tasks safely.
  • Maintain comprehensive records (portfolio of evidence) of all training activities.
  • Place, clear, and dispatch wagons and locomotives according to safety protocols.
  • Ensure accurate data capturing and reporting for yard operations.
  • Adhere to shunting procedures, high voltage safety instructions, and hazardous material protocols.
  • Collaborate with yard teams to achieve operational goals and deadlines.

Eligibility Criteria

  • South African citizen with a valid ID, aged 18–35 (preferred).
  • Grade 12 certificate with pure Mathematics and/or Physical Science (preferred).
  • Computer literacy (proficiency in Microsoft Office applications).
  • Diploma in Trains Working (or willingness to obtain during training).
  • Pass psychological screening (battery test) and medical tests (vision, hearing, physical fitness).
  • No criminal record, verified through background checks.
  • Physically fit to perform yard duties and handle heavy objects.
  • Willingness to work shifts, including nights and weekends.

Preferences

  • Candidates from designated Employment Equity groups (Coloureds, Indians, Whites, persons with disabilities).
  • Residents near Transnet depots (e.g., Beaufort West, Vryheid, Ermelo, Durban).
  • Previous exposure to rail or logistics environments.
  • Strong mathematical and analytical skills.
