About the Presidential Youth Employment Initiative
The Presidential Youth Employment Initiative (PYEI), managed by the Department of Employment and Labour, is a flagship programme addressing South Africa’s youth unemployment crisis. By providing work experience and skills development, PYEI empowers unemployed graduates to transition from learning to earning, contributing to economic growth and social cohesion
Program Purpose
The PYEI Counsellor Programme 2025 offers 130 internship posts for unemployed South African graduates with a 3-year tertiary qualification in Psychology or Industrial Psychology. Running for 10 months, the programme provides practical experience in career guidance, recruitment, and job seeker support, with a monthly stipend of R7,450.63. Posts are available across Gauteng (16), KwaZulu-Natal (16), Eastern Cape (16), Western Cape (16), Mpumalanga (8), North West (15), Northern Cape (12), Limpopo (17), and Free State (14).
Key Responsibilities
- Provide administrative support to counselling offices, including data management and scheduling.
- Conduct research on labour market trends and employment counselling best practices.
- Assist in recruitment and selection processes for work seekers.
- Collaborate with stakeholders to ensure high-quality service delivery.
- Register and support work seekers in accessing job opportunities.
- Contribute to career guidance initiatives for youth and unemployed individuals.

Eligibility Criteria
- South African citizen with a valid ID.
- 3-year National Diploma or Degree in Psychology or Industrial Psychology (NQF Level 6/7).
- Unemployed at the time of appointment and not enrolled in full-time studies.
- No prior participation in a similar internship programme.
- Commitment to a 10-month programme starting from the appointment date.
Preferences
- Honours Degree in Psychology or Industrial Psychology.
- Registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Registered Counsellor or Psychometrist (Independent Practice).
- Candidates from designated employment equity groups (Coloureds, Indians, Whites, persons with disabilities).
