General Assistant Cleaning, hygiene and office upkeep

The General Assistant will provide reliable cleaning, hygiene, office, logistical and basic administrative support to ensure the safe, orderly and efficient day-to-day operation of the Ke Botlhokwa programme office in Kuruman. The role will maintain a professional environment for staff, clients and visitors; support meetings, training and approved programme activities; and help safeguard supplies, equipment and other programme resources. The General Assistant will contribute to consistent programme implementation by ensuring that essential support functions are completed efficiently, safely and on schedule.

Cleaning, hygiene and office upkeep

  • Clean and maintain offices, meeting rooms, kitchens, ablution facilities and other assigned areas in accordance with agreed schedules and hygiene standards.
  • Sweep, mop, vacuum, dust, clean windows, and disinfect surfaces.
  • Empty waste bins, separate or dispose of waste through approved procedures, and keep waste storage points clean and orderly.
  • Keep kitchens and refreshment areas clean, hygienic and appropriately stocked.
  • Immediately report spillages, pest concerns, damage, maintenance needs or any condition that may affect health, safety or service delivery.

Cleaning materials, groceries and supply control

  • Monitor cleaning materials, paper products, refreshments and other assigned consumables, and notify the supervisor in sufficient time to prevent stock-outs.
  • Receive, check, store and issue supplies as directed, keeping storage areas secure, labelled and orderly.
  • Maintain simple stock records or checklists and report discrepancies, losses, expired items or damaged goods promptly.
  • Use supplies and equipment responsibly, economically and only for authorised programme purposes.

Meeting, training and programme-activity support

  • Prepare offices, meeting rooms and approved venues for meetings, training sessions, workshops and other programme activities.
  • Provide practical support during approved office-based or outreach activities when requested.
  • Help restore venues and workspaces to a clean, safe and orderly condition after use.

Basic administrative and operational support

  • Assist with basic filing, photocopying, document organisation, attendance registers and preparation or packing of programme materials, as directed.
  • Receive and direct visitors courteously in accordance with office procedures, without disclosing confidential client or programme information.
  • Undertake authorised local errands and deliveries
  • Support routine office-opening or closing tasks assigned by the supervisor.

Health, safety, security and asset care

  • Follow organisational health and safety procedures
  • Help maintain clear walkways, safe workspaces and unobstructed emergency exits.
  • Safeguard keys, equipment, materials and other assets, and immediately report damage, loss, theft or security concerns.
  • Report workplace incidents and maintenance requirements promptly.

Professional conduct and teamwork

  • Treat staff, clients, visitors and service providers with courtesy, dignity and respect.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding client information, staff matters and programme activities.
  • Work cooperatively with programme and office teams and manage time effectively.
  • Maintain a neat and professional appearance and represent Anova and Ke Botlhokwa appropriately during routine interactions.
  • Undertake other reasonable and relevant duties agreed with the line manager and consistent with the purpose of the role.

Qualifications and experience

  • Grade 10-12; a Grade 12/Matric qualification will be an advantage.
  • At least one year’s experience in office, domestic, institutional or facility cleaning, preferably in a health, NGO or community-programme environment.
  • Basic literacy and numeracy, with the ability to complete simple records, checklists and stock counts.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English and languages used in the local community.
  • Knowledge of basic cleaning, hygiene and workplace-safety practices.
  • Willingness and ability to support approved programme activities outside the Kuruman office when required.
