Job Purpose
The Learner Lab Assistant – Prelab position at Ampath’s National Reference Laboratory in Centurion is a full-time role designed for Matric holders with HPCSA registration and 1–2 years of laboratory experience. You’ll sort, distribute, and process samples, operate automated systems, resolve queries, and ensure compliance with safety standards, supporting timely and accurate diagnostic results. With a market-related salary (approximately R6,000–R10,000 per month), this role offers a pathway to a career in medical laboratory science.
Key Responsibilities
- Sort, distribute, and receive samples to ensure efficient specimen flow.
- Process specimens accurately to deliver timely and reliable results.
- Operate and maintain automated systems for optimal laboratory performance.
- Resolve sample-related queries to uphold service quality.
- Perform administrative tasks to support laboratory operations.
- Maintain good client relations to promote Ampath’s reputation.
- Adhere to safety and accreditation standards, including the Human Tissue Act and OSHA.
- Use Meditech and MS Office for data management and reporting.

Eligibility Criteria
- South African citizen with a valid ID or valid South African work permit.
- Grade 12 certificate with English, Biology (Life Sciences), and Mathematics.
- HPCSA registration in the relevant register and practice field (or eligibility to register post-training).
- 1–2 years of relevant laboratory experience.
- 2–3 years of general experience in a medical environment.
- Knowledge of HPCSA regulations, Human Tissue Act, and OSHA.
- Proficiency in Meditech, MS Word, MS Excel, Google, and Google Mail.
- Understanding of medical terminology and Ampath’s safety policies.
Preferences
- Previous experience in a pathology laboratory setting.
- Residents of Centurion or surrounding Gauteng areas.
- Candidates from designated employment equity groups (Coloureds, Indians, Whites, persons with disabilities).
- Basic training in laboratory safety or specimen handling.
