South African National Parks has announced eight seasonal General Worker vacancies at West Coast National Park. These positions are offered on a three-month fixed-term contract and may suit applicants with Grade 12 and previous general work experience.

The successful candidates will report to the Section Ranger and Duty Manager. Applicants should note that SANParks will not provide official accommodation, meaning appointed candidates must arrange their own accommodation near the park.

The opportunity is primarily aimed at people from Langebaan, Vredenburg, Hopefield, Saldanha, St Helena Bay and Paternoster.

The remuneration package includes a basic salary based on the SANParks Paterson A3 job grade, together with applicable allowances and benefits.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Grade 12, Matric, NCV Level 4 or an equivalent qualification.
  • Between one and two years of general work or related experience.
  • Basic knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
  • Knowledge of basic first aid.
  • Ability to communicate in English and at least one other official South African language.
  • A valid SARS tax reference number.
  • A clear criminal record.
  • Ability to work long hours while standing or walking.
  • Physical fitness to work outdoors in sun, rain and windy conditions.
  • Willingness to work weekends, public holidays and occasional overtime.
  • Applicants must be punctual, dependable and responsible.

A valid driver’s licence will be an added advantage.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

The appointed Seasonal General Workers will assist with the daily upkeep, cleanliness and maintenance of West Coast National Park.

Key responsibilities will include:

General Maintenance

Workers will maintain the park’s terrain, gardens, visitor accommodation, access-control points and day-visitor facilities.

They may also assist with inspecting, repairing, cleaning and replacing basic infrastructure such as watering systems, sewerage systems, braai facilities and parking areas.

Cleaning and Housekeeping

Successful applicants will clean ablution blocks, picnic areas, conservation areas and other visitor facilities according to SANParks cleanliness standards.

Duties will include:

  • Removing refuse.
  • Emptying and replacing rubbish bins.
  • Disposing of waste correctly.
  • Cleaning visitor facilities and equipment.
  • Monitoring and replenishing toiletries, stationery and cleaning supplies.
  • Handling and storing cleaning machinery and equipment safely.

Visitor Assistance

General Workers will assist visitors by answering basic questions, sharing park information and helping to create a clean, safe and welcoming environment.

Applicants may also assist with managing visitor expectations and addressing basic customer needs.

Entrance Gate and Traffic Support

Workers may assist with admission management at the R27 Entrance Gate and Langebaan Entrance Gate.

Additional duties may include basic traffic control, directing vehicles and helping visitors find suitable parking.

Events and Activities

The appointed candidates may assist with preparations for guided walks, braai areas, educational activities and other park events.

Safety and Law Enforcement Support

Workers must comply with health and safety procedures to help prevent accidents and contamination.

They may also be required to support basic law-enforcement activities, including participating in regular patrols.

Inventory and Reporting

The role includes assisting with stock control for cleaning supplies and guest amenities.

Workers must report maintenance problems and damaged equipment, including:

  • Water leaks.
  • Broken furniture.
  • Electrical faults.
  • Damaged equipment.
  • Problems affecting visitor facilities.

Other related duties may be assigned by the relevant manager.
