About the Petra Diamonds Job Vacancy as Electrician 2025
Petra Diamonds is currently searching for candidates who are in need of urgent employment within the mining sector as a capable and reliable Electrician. Petra Diamonds is seeking a qualified and experienced Electrician to join the team at its Finsch Diamond Mine, located in the town of Lime Acres, approximately 160 km northwest of Kimberley and 109 km south of Kuruman in the Northern Cape.
The Electrician will be responsible for the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of both Medium Voltage and Low Voltage electrical equipment within the electrical discipline. This role requires adherence to established engineering practices, strict compliance with equipment specifications, and a commitment to safe and efficient operational standards. The successful candidate will ensure that all electrical systems are functioning optimally, contributing to the smooth operation and productivity of the mine.
You will be required to perform the duties below:
- Provide expert knowledge and skills within your area of responsibility, offering advice to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the department or section
- Conduct inspections following the Mine Health and Safety Act Regulations and company standards, reporting all equipment and machinery defects to the Foreman
- Report faults and unsafe conditions to the Central Control Room promptly
- Participate in planning shutdowns, including organizing maintenance, resources, tools, and spare parts for scheduled activities
- Identify required spare parts and order them according to departmental procedures
- Manage consumable stock levels, including spares and hydrocarbons, ensuring availability for operational needs
- Investigate, diagnose, and perform maintenance and repairs on equipment and machinery according to trade and maintenance requirements
- Assist the Foreman in executing duties as needed
- Carry out planned task observations to ensure compliance and safety
- Follow instructions outlined on job cards and report any defects encountered
- De-energize equipment and apply the lock-out procedure in accordance with company policy
- Install and replace electrical motors as required
- Install, joint, and terminate electrical distribution and control cables
- Install and maintain gully and Low Tension (LT) Distribution boxes
- Install motor control centres and distribution boards
- Install lighting systems throughout the facility
- Maintain medium voltage protection systems to ensure safe operation
- Perform maintenance on medium voltage capacitor banks
- Maintain substation batteries and ensure overall substation housekeeping
- Perform medium voltage switching safely and efficiently
- Maintain electrical equipment, including MV and LV switchgear, substations, motors, lighting systems, MCC panels, and distribution boards
General Responsibilities as Electrician
- Install, maintain, and repair electrical systems, wiring, and equipment according to safety standards
- Inspect electrical components, identify faults, and troubleshoot issues efficiently
- Read and interpret technical diagrams, blueprints, and electrical schematics
- Test electrical systems and equipment to ensure proper functioning and compliance
- Follow safety protocols and regulations to minimize risks in all electrical work
- Maintain accurate records of inspections, repairs, and maintenance activities
- Assist in planning and implementing new electrical projects or system upgrades
- Collaborate with other team members, contractors, and departments as required
- Perform preventive maintenance to reduce downtime and extend the life of electrical systems
- Stay updated on industry developments, new technologies, and best practices in electrical work.
