About the Transnet Train Assistant Traineeship 2026
Transnet is offering a traineeship for candidates who are keen on obtaining necessary training as a professional Train Assistant with the establishment. The Transnet Train Assistant Traineeship aims to equip candidates with the required skills, knowledge, and hands-on experience to excel in this role. During the traineeship, selected candidates will undergo comprehensive training that covers various aspects of assisting in the operation and management of trains.

The program will include both theoretical classroom sessions and practical on-the-job training, ensuring a well-rounded learning experience. Trainees will receive guidance and mentorship from experienced professionals within the railway industry, enabling them to develop a deep understanding of the operational procedures, safety protocols, and technical aspects involved in being a Train Assistant.

The Transnet Train Assistant Traineeship  requires you to perform the following responsibilities:

  • Report for duty at the assigned work location and receive the duties for the shift duration
  • Prepare locomotives for operation
  • Get communication equipment ready
  • Conduct pre-trip preparation of the Locomotives and the entire Train before departure to comply with roadworthiness, train working rules, and safety standards
  • Conduct shunting activities in sidings and along the route as directed to enhance safe working procedures
  • Assist the train driver during the journey to ensure the safe movement of the train without delays or damage to equipment and infrastructure, providing reliable service
  • Adhere to safety standards and instructions to maintain motivation and competence
  • Promptly provide accurate feedback to the Train Driver about any incidents or deviations along the route
  • Assist with various administrative tasks
  • Complete the Train journal after each shift and submit it to the Section Manager at sign-off for timely and accurate processing of monthly salary.

Eligibility Criteria
Prospective candidates for the Transnet Train Assistant Traineeship must meet specific eligibility criteria before proceeding with their applications.   • Have Grade 12 with pure Mathematics and/or Physical Science
  • Undergo periodic medical surveillance and safety behavioral risk assessments during the selection process and every 12 months
  • Undergo physical hearing, vision, mental, and fitness tests to be verified through medical tests and related safety behavioral risk assessments
  • Do not allow employees younger than 21 years of age to undertake train driver or train control duties (SANS 3000, par 6.2.6.8)
  • Successfully undergo Train Assistant duties (theoretical and practical) to be certified to work independently as a Train Assistant
  • Be a minimum of 1.6 meters tall
  • Demonstrate psychomotor ability through Vienna Testing System (VTS) standard
  • Show the ability to carry heavy objects.
