This Safety Officer position will be based in a mining environment in Kathu, which means the successful candidate must be fully prepared for the responsibilities that come with keeping workers safe in a high-risk area.
Where This Job Is Based
This role is only open to local candidates living in:
- Kathu
- Postmasburg
- Kuruman
You must already stay in one of these areas to be considered for the job. This is important for quick response to site matters and daily presence at the mining location.
What Is the Main Purpose of This Role?
The main job of the Safety Officer (Mining Security) is to create a safe, secure, and legally compliant working environment for everyone on the mining site. You will be responsible for making sure all safety laws and workplace rules are followed, and that every possible danger is managed correctly.
Your goal will be to help create a “zero harm” culture, meaning no serious injuries, no major accidents, and no ignored risks.
This is not just a desk job. You will be active on the site, working with people, checking documents, inspecting areas, and giving guidance to make sure the environment stays safe.
Important Duties and Responsibilities
Ensuring Legal Compliance
You will make sure the site follows key safety and legal standards such as:
- Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA)
- ISO 18788:2015
- ISO 14001:2015
- ISO 9001:2015
- ISO 45001:2018
- PSIRA Regulations
- POPIA Requirements
You will also work closely with mining authorities and other regulatory bodies to make sure the company stays fully compliant at all times.
Managing Risks and Hazards
One of your most important roles will be to:
- Identify dangerous areas or activities
- Do full risk assessments
- Suggest ways to reduce or remove dangers
- Monitor health risks in the workplace
- Help plan emergency responses
Your work will help prevent accidents before they happen.
Handling Safety Procedures and Documents
You will have to prepare, update, and maintain important safety paperwork such as:
- Safe Operating Procedures (SOPs)
- SHE (Safety, Health and Environment) files
- Legal compliance documents
- Monthly safety reports for management
You will report directly to the Site Manager, Managing Director, and National Compliance Manager.
Your attention to detail here will be very important.
Audits, Inspections, and Observations
You will perform regular:
- Internal SHE inspections
- Safety audits using COMSOC 1 & 2 principles
- Planned Job Observations (PJO)
- Contractor safety checks
These inspections help to make sure all workers and contractors are following proper safety rules.
Incident Investigation and Reporting
If an accident or safety incident happens, you will:
- Help investigate what caused it
- Use the WHY method to find the root problem
- Collect data for reports
- Provide solutions to prevent it happening again
This process is very important for learning and improvement.
Training and Safety Awareness
You will also be responsible for teaching others about safety by:
- Running safety training workshops
- Conducting toolbox talks
- Performing daily safety briefings
- Promoting safe behaviour at all times
This means you must be confident and able to speak clearly to groups of workers.

Required Qualifications

- COMSOC 1 & 2 Certificates (Chamber of Mines)
- Diploma in Mine Safety Management or Risk (Non-negotiable)
- PSIRA Grade A Certificate
These qualifications are very important for this role and cannot be skipped.

- SAMTRAC Certificate
- NEBOSH Certificate
Experience Requirements
You must have:
- 3 to 5 years of experience in mining or safety-related roles
- Strong knowledge of ISO 45001 safety systems
- Good experience in incident reporting and investigations
- Experience working in high-risk environments
