Role Purpose

The main purpose of this role is to conduct outreach within the PWID community.

You will provide accurate health information, encourage access to healthcare services, and support individuals in connecting with treatment and care programmes.

Key Responsibilities

As a Peer Educator, your duties will include:

Distributing harm reduction packs and safer sex materials
Collecting used injecting equipment safely in designated sharps bins
Providing education on HIV, TB, Hepatitis, and safe injecting practices
Encouraging HIV testing and promoting prevention methods such as PrEP
Referring individuals to healthcare facilities and support services
Supporting psychological well-being and social service referrals
Recruiting individuals for Opioid Substitution Therapy (OST) programmes
Identifying and supporting women in the community with dignity packs

This role plays a vital part in improving public health outcomes.

Minimum Requirements

To apply, you must meet the following criteria:

Grade 10 qualification
At least 1 year of experience working within the PWID community or as a peer educator
Must be a current or former person who has used or injected drugs (peer-based role requirement)
Ability to read and write in English
Clear criminal record

Language Requirements

Proficiency in:

English
isiXhosa or Afrikaans
Any additional South African language is an advantage
