Key Responsibilities
The Ranger Sergeant will have a wide range of responsibilities that require practical experience, leadership, and strong decision-making skills:
Natural Resource Management
- Manage invasive plants, unnatural soil erosion, and veld fires
- Conduct game counts, animal captures, and culling operations
- Assist with the sustainable management of the park’s natural resources
Law Enforcement
- Conduct regular foot and vehicle patrols
- Enforce park regulations and assist with visitor and staff control
- Gather, interpret, and share relevant information for park operations
Leadership and Administration
- Maintain law, order, and discipline among staff and community members
- Execute anti-poaching operations including deployment and monitoring
- Assist the Section Ranger with long-term routine tasks
- Supervise and train subordinates on-the-job
- Ensure high standards of administration and reporting
- Liaise directly with the Section Ranger on all operational matters
Stakeholder Engagement
- Build purposeful relationships with key stakeholders
- Support a culture of corporate governance and proactive risk management
- Participate in planning to ensure effective patrols and area coverage
This role requires someone who can lead by example, remain calm under pressure, and respond effectively in a variety of challenging situations.
Requirements to Apply
Applicants must meet the following essential criteria:
- Grade 12 certificate or equivalent
- National Diploma / NQF Level 6 in Nature Conservation or Natural Resource Management
- Field Ranger Basic or Advanced Training
- EMI Grade 5
- Firearm competency and proficiency with self-loading rifle
- Code 8 driver’s license (PDP an added advantage)
- 2–3 years as a Field Ranger Lance Corporal or Full Corporal
- 2 years’ supervisory experience
- Experience in infrastructure maintenance, area coverage, and anti-poaching operations
- Practical experience in wild veld firefighting and natural resource management
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Excellent fitness, mental alertness, and willingness to reside in the park
Remuneration and Benefits
The Ranger Sergeant position is a Paterson C1 job grade and includes a basic salary, allowances, and benefits as per the SANParks HR Tariff Document. Accommodation is provided inside the park due to operational requirements.
