What Does a Rand Water Board Member Do?

Your main responsibility is to ensure that Rand Water operates ethically, responsibly, and in line with national laws and policies. You will help protect public interest while supporting the organisation’s long-term sustainability.
Main Responsibilities of the Board Role
Strategic Oversight
Board Members help oversee the organisation’s strategy, business model, and major policies. You ensure that Rand Water’s goals align with national water priorities and community needs.
Risk and Governance Management
You will review risks facing the organisation and ensure that proper controls are in place. This includes financial risks, operational risks, compliance risks, and environmental risks.
Compliance and Accountability
You ensure Rand Water follows all laws, regulations, and governance standards. This includes PFMA, King IV governance principles, and water sector legislation.
Board Participation
You will attend Board and Committee meetings according to the approved annual calendar. You will contribute to discussions, decision-making, and policy direction.
Support to Executive Management
You provide guidance to executive leaders while maintaining independent oversight. Your role helps strengthen leadership accountability and performance.
Minimum Qualifications and Experience Required
To qualify, candidates must meet strong professional standards:
Education Requirements
- Minimum: Recognised Bachelor’s Degree at NQF Level 7
- Preferred: Postgraduate Qualification at NQF Level 9 or equivalent
Professional Experience
Candidates must have experience in one or more of the following areas:
- Engineering, science, water services management, environmental management, or construction
- Corporate governance, compliance, commercial law, and risk management
- Financial management, accounting, investments, supply chain, or digital technology governance
- Large infrastructure project management and regulatory frameworks
Additional experience requirements include:
- At least 5 years as a non-executive director
- At least 5 years serving on Board Committees
- At least 5–10 years at executive or senior management level
- Experience working in boardroom environments and governance structures
Candidates must also understand fiduciary duties, governance laws, and public sector regulations.

Remuneration Information
Board Members receive remuneration approved by the Minister of Water and Sanitation. Payments cover authorised duties and official engagements as a non-executive director.
