Peer Educator

Founded in 1929, TB HIV Care (THC) is an internationally recognised non-profit organisation that provides health care services across South Africa. Job Purpose

The Peer Educator will work with People Who Inject Drugs (PWID) communities, conducting outreach activities to provide accurate health information, distribute harm reduction resources, and link individuals to essential HIV, TB, and health care services. This role is vital in promoting safe practices, human rights, and improved health outcomes within the PWID/PWUD community.

Minimum Requirements

  • Grade 10 qualification
  • Must be an ex- or current drug user to ensure relatability and peer support
  • At least 1 year’s work experience within the PWID/PWUD community or as a Peer Educator
  • Ability to read and write clearly in English
  • Proficiency in isiXhosa, Afrikaans, English, and any other South African language
  • Clear criminal record

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Distribute harm reduction packs and safer sex commodities.
  • Safely collect used injecting equipment in sharps bins from outreach areas.
  • Provide accurate health information on:
    • Harm reduction and safe injecting practices
    • HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis, TB, Sexual & Reproductive Health (SRH), and human rights
  • Link and refer PWID/PWUD to care:
    • HIV/TB treatment (via mobile nurse, drop-in centre, or nearest health facility)
    • HIV testing and PrEP (HIV prevention) services for HIV-negative individuals
  • Promote psychological support and referrals to social services.
  • Recruit PWID/PWUD for Opioid Substitution Therapy (OST) and complete eligibility checks.
  • Identify and support women who inject drugs, including the distribution of dignity packs.
