Learnership Purpose
The Metro Police and Traffic Learnership is an 18-month program (June 1, 2025–November 30, 2026) for unemployed youth aged 18–34, offering training in road traffic law enforcement through the Public Safety Training College. Learners will complete the Further Education and Training Certificate: Road Traffic Law Enforcement and Law Enforcement Skills Program SP4/2012, receiving a stipend of R34.91 per hour while developing skills for a potential career in public safety.
Key Performance Areas
- Complete rigorous training in road traffic law enforcement and related skills.
- Participate in strenuous physical training to meet fitness requirements.
- Adhere to the Public Safety Training College’s code of conduct and pass requirements.
- Prepare to work shifts, wear a uniform, and operate in all weather conditions upon completion.
- Maintain professionalism and teamwork under stressful conditions.
Minimum Requirements
- Grade 12/Matric certificate.
- Permanent resident of Cape Town (proof required).
- Proficiency in English and at least one other official South African language.
- Currently unemployed (students and EPWP staff eligible).
- Age 18–34 years.
- Medically and physically fit for strenuous training.
- Valid Code B driver’s license (manual transmission).
- No criminal record or visible tattoos when in uniform.
- Ability to work in a team and handle stressful situations.
Compulsory Fitness Tests
- 2.4 km run (males: 11 minutes; females: 13 minutes).
- Push-ups (30 in 60 seconds, both genders).
- Sit-ups (30 in 60 seconds, both genders).
- Dead load carry (100m, 2 x 25kg weights, both genders).
- Tyre drag (20m, both genders).
- Shuttle runs (20m, 10 runs in 60 seconds, both genders).
- 2.1m wall clearing (both genders).
- Motorcycle reach test (both genders).
- Comfort swim (any stroke, unassisted, both genders).
Additional Assessments
- Pass a written assessment, interview, and physical assessment.
- Submit fingerprints and ID for criminal record checks.
- Undergo a City medical evaluation and compulsory drug test.
- Pass a driver assessment.
Special Conditions
- No guaranteed permanent position post-learnership.
- Extensive physical training, including firearm and ammunition handling per the Firearm and Ammunitions Act.
- Applicants with chronic diseases or physical impairments may be excluded if conditions disrupt training.
- Successful candidates must wear a uniform, work shifts, and operate in all weather conditions.
- Rotation within or outside Cape Town boundaries may be required.
- Mandatory ongoing fitness, medical, and psychological assessments.
- No private work or business with the State without City approval.
- Previous Local Government employees dismissed for misconduct are ineligible.
