Job Advert Summary | TB HIV Care (THC), in existence since 1929, is an internationally recognised non-profit organisation. We provide health care services throughout South Africa to both the general population and communities at increased risk for HIV and TB, including adolescent girls and young women, sex workers and people who use drugs. THC provides a stimulating work environment and the opportunity to work with leaders in the field of HIV and TB prevention and care. Our work culture is adapted to the constantly evolving South African health care environment and will suit solution-driven team players interested in opportunities for career development while working to connect people with care. Purpose of the position: The Learner support agent will conduct mobilization and pre-vulnerability screening to identify the vulnerable AGYW and record on the case management register. Provide case management to all AGYW initiated on PrEP to promote continuation in care. |
The role of the Learners Support Agent (LSA) is multifaceted and crucial in connecting vulnerable communities to essential health services. For instance, LSAs may work closely with local schools, community centers, and health clinics to raise awareness about HIV prevention methods and resources available to adolescents and young women. This proactive approach not only helps in mobilizing support but also in dispelling myths and stigma surrounding HIV/AIDS. By conducting workshops and information sessions, LSAs can educate young people about the importance of prevention strategies like PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) and regular health check-ups.
Furthermore, the role requires a deep understanding of cultural sensitivities and the ability to communicate effectively in multiple languages. Being fluent in English, IsiXhosa, and potentially other South African languages allows LSAs to connect with a broader range of individuals, ensuring that health messages are conveyed in an accessible and relatable manner. This aspect is particularly important in a diverse country like South Africa, where language and culture significantly impact individuals’ willingness to seek help.
LSAs are also instrumental in the recruitment and retention of young women in youth care clubs. These clubs serve as supportive environments where young women can discuss their experiences, challenges, and successes in navigating health services. By fostering a sense of community, LSAs help empower these individuals to take charge of their health and well-being.
In a world increasingly reliant on technology, computer literacy and IT skills are becoming essential for LSAs. They often utilize digital platforms to track data, manage case files, and communicate with team members. Proficiency in these areas can enhance their efficiency and effectiveness, allowing them to focus more on community engagement rather than administrative tasks.

This collaboration ensures a comprehensive approach to health education and resource distribution.
