About KZN Dept of Transport – Trainee Provincial Inspector 2025-2026
The Department of Transport is offering 200 Trainee Provincial Inspector positions at the Traffic Training College in Pietermaritzburg. This is a two-year fixed-term contract during which trainees will undergo intensive training and complete the Traffic Officer’s Diploma.

Successful candidates will be responsible for enforcing traffic laws, regulating traffic flow, patrolling roads, conducting inspections at licensing and vehicle testing centres, participating in law enforcement operations, and assisting with accident scene management. Upon successful completion of the programme, candidates will be permanently appointed as Provincial Inspectors (Salary Level 6) with a 12-month probation period.

Duties and Responsibilities
As a Trainee Provincial Inspector, you will be responsible for:

  • Traffic Law Enforcement
    • Implement planned and approved traffic law enforcement activities
    • Regulate traffic flow through point duty and manage congestion in busy areas
    • Coordinate and secure accident scenes, identify hazardous locations, and advise management accordingly
    • Take part in traffic policing projects, including speed enforcement operations
    • Issue notices, execute arrests in line with relevant legislation, and provide testimony in court when required
    • Escort abnormal vehicles and loads to ensure safe movement, and assist with overload control for both goods and passengers.
  • Driver and Vehicle Compliance
    • Conduct learner’s licence and driver’s licence tests
    • Carry out vehicle roadworthiness inspections
    • Monitor compliance at Driver Licence Testing Centres (DLTC) and Vehicle Testing Stations (VTS).
  • Visible Traffic Control and Crime Prevention
    • Assist with visible policing, offering support to motorists and performing escort duties
    • Participate in roadblocks and other special enforcement operations
    • Patrol assigned areas, warning motorists about hazardous road conditions (e.g., breakdowns, damaged road surfaces).
  • Administrative and Support Duties
    • Maintain effective administrative procedures
    • Ensure compliance with the Firearms and Ammunition Act (Act 60 of 2000)
    • Adhere to operational plans and assigned activities
    • Participate in human resource development programmes
    • Promote efficient service delivery and maintain the professional image of the Directorate: Traffic Law Enforcement.

Job Requirements

  • A Senior Certificate (Matric) or equivalent (NQF Level 4)
  • A valid Code B driver’s licence (manual transmission)
  • Must be a South African Citizen or Permanent Resident
  • No criminal record (subject to SAPS clearance check)
  • A recent medical certificate (not older than 3 months) confirming fitness for strenuous exercise
  • Age not older than 35 years on the first day of training
  • Good communication, problem-solving, teamwork, and driving skills
  • Physical and mental fitness to perform the duties required
  • Additional tests include written competency tests, driving evaluations, medical and fitness examinations, and interviews.

Successful candidates must be able to carry firearms and will be required to undergo training and competency assessments in accordance with the Firearm Control Act. All applicants must complete an indemnity form as part of the recruitment process.

During the selection stages, applicants will be subjected to alcohol screening. Any candidate who tests positive will be immediately disqualified.

Furthermore, successful candidates will be required to serve a minimum of 12 months within the Road Traffic Inspectorate upon completion of the Traffic Officer Diploma Course. Failure to fulfil this obligation will result in the candidate being held liable for the full course fees as determined by the Traffic Training College.
