If you’re a young South African passionate about the world of live performance and behind-the-scenes production, here’s your golden opportunity. Joburg City Theatres is offering a Live Event Technical Production Learnership Programme aimed at equipping unemployed youth with the technical skills required in the live event and entertainment industry. This hands-on learnership leads to a Nationally Recognised NQF Level 4 Qualification, opening doors to a career in one of the most exciting sectors in the creative economy.
What the Learnership Offers
This programme is more than just training—it’s a gateway into the heart of Johannesburg’s performing arts scene. Participants will gain comprehensive practical and theoretical training in areas such as:
- Stage lighting
- Audio and visual setup
- Backstage production management
- Technical stage operations
- Event equipment handling and safety
Learners will work at prestigious Joburg City Theatres venues such as Joburg Theatre, Roodepoort Theatre, and Soweto Theatre, gaining real-world experience that aligns with industry standards.
Upon successful completion, participants will receive an NQF Level 4 National Certificate in Live Event Technical Production, making them job-ready for opportunities in theatres, festivals, concerts, and corporate events.
Who Can Apply?
Joburg City Theatres is specifically targeting unemployed youth who are eager to break into the live event industry. To be eligible, applicants must:
- Be between the ages of 18–35
- Be currently unemployed
- Possess Grade 10, 11 or 12 (Matric not required but accepted)
- Be South African citizens with a valid ID
- Have a strong interest in live event production
No prior experience in theatre or technical production is required—just enthusiasm, commitment, and a willingness to learn.
Why This Programme Matters
South Africa’s creative sector continues to grow, offering significant employment opportunities for skilled technical professionals. However, access to formal training remains limited, especially for young people from disadvantaged backgrounds. This learnership serves as a bridge, allowing youth to acquire industry-specific qualifications while gaining hands-on work experience in a professional theatre environment.
Not only does this programme enhance employability, but it also contributes to transforming the creative economy by nurturing a new generation of behind-the-scenes professionals who can help bring the magic of theatre to life.
