The Judicial Inspectorate for Correctional Services (JICS) invites qualifying and community-minded individuals to apply for 12 Independent Correctional Centre Visitor (ICCV) positions on a 36-month contract. These roles play a vital part in promoting transparency, accountability, and humane conditions within South Africa’s correctional centres.

Salary and Benefits

  • Salary: R85 620 per annum
  • Level: 05 (3/8th post)
  • Additional: 37% in lieu of benefits

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Grade 12 / Senior Certificate
  • Computer literacy and accuracy in administrative work
  • Nomination or recommendation as an ICCV from a community organisation (not older than six months)
  • Ability to work independently and within a team
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Sound knowledge of Batho Pele Principles
  • Assertiveness and ability to work under pressure
  • Public-spirited and ethically grounded
  • Valid driver’s licence (advantageous)

Preference will be given to applicants residing in communities close to the correctional centre applied for.


Key Responsibilities

Successful candidates will be responsible for:

  • Daily visits to assigned correctional facilities
  • Engaging with inmates and Department of Correctional Services officials regarding complaints and concerns
  • Monitoring conditions of incarceration and compiling detailed reports
  • Reporting on deaths in custody, segregation, use of force, and mechanical restraints
  • Assisting JICS officials during inspections and investigations
  • Managing administrative duties, including capturing inmate complaints and mandatory reporting
