What Will You Do as a Fire Fighter?
Your job will involve more than just putting out fires. You will be trained and supported to handle all kinds of emergency situations, including:
- Responding quickly to fires, rescues, and emergency or non-emergency incidents
- Handling incidents with hazardous substances (gevaarlike stowwe)
- Saving and helping injured or trapped people during emergencies
- Using breathing apparatus and firefighting equipment to control and extinguish fires
- Performing fire prevention duties to protect lives and property
- Training and advising staff on firefighting methods and safety measures
- Conducting health and safety checks to ensure a safe work environment
- Maintaining firefighting vehicles, tools, and equipment to keep them ready for action
- Keeping accurate records of all incidents through computerised logs
You will work under the guidance and supervision of experienced officers and seniors, gaining skills through practice and training drills designed to keep you fit and ready.
What Qualifications and Experience Do You Need?
You must meet these requirements to qualify:
- Grade 12 school certificate minimum
- IFSAC Accredited and NFPA 1001 Firefighter II Certification
- At least 2 years of firefighting training and experience
- Valid driver’s license without endorsements; advanced driving skills are a bonus
- Be physically and medically fit for the demands of firefighting
- Good knowledge of fire prevention, fire chemistry, and fire-fighting systems
- Clear criminal record
- Ability to act quickly and efficiently in emergencies
- Excellent administration, communication, and customer service skills
- Experience or knowledge of hazmat situations (gevaarlike stowwe)
- EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) certification and First Aid levels 1 to 3
Core Skills and Competencies
You should have strong verbal and written communication abilities, understand the Hazmat safety guidelines deeply, and be familiar with the security industry’s code of conduct. You will also need to know how to teach firefighting basics when required.
