As a General Assistant at BME, you’ll support the truck operator in collecting and delivering products from silos to the blasting site. You’ll also help maintain vehicles and work areas, ensuring everything is done safely, efficiently, and in line with legal and company standards.

What You’ll Do in This Role
As a General Assistant (ROG), you’ll work closely with the blaster and MMU (Mobile Manufacturing Unit) team to ensure that every job runs smoothly. Your responsibilities will include:
- Performing risk assessments and completing safe work declarations before entering any site.
- Assisting the MMU operator with charging blasting holes and loading products safely.
- Helping the blaster prepare the blast area according to all statutory, client, and company standards.
- Inspecting the site with the blaster to plan and determine the target block for blasting.
- Setting up barricades and ensuring safety measures are in place before blasting begins.
- Mapping holes, checking their placement and depth, and ensuring they meet all required specifications.
- Reporting and correcting any deviations or safety risks immediately.
- Collecting and preparing the necessary blasting accessories, such as detonators and boosters.
- Assisting with priming blast holes and preparing the site for detonation under supervision.
- Completing additional assigned duties on time and maintaining good communication with your team.
This job requires strong attention to detail, teamwork, and a focus on safety at all times.
What You’ll Need to Qualify
To qualify for this role, you’ll need the following:
Minimum Requirement:
- Grade 12 (Matric) with Mathematics
Advantageous Requirements:
- Code B or EC Driver’s Licence
- Competent A & Blasting Assistant Certificate (MQA)
Experience:
- 1 year experience in a mining or blasting environment
- 1 year experience as a blasting assistant
If you’ve worked in mining or have experience supporting blasting teams, you’ll have a great advantage in this role.
