Minimum Requirements

Applicants must have at least Grade 10 as the minimum educational requirement.

The Department is looking for candidates who are able to read, write, and understand simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Previous experience in a hospital, clinical, or porter environment will be an added advantage.

Candidates must also be willing to work shifts, including night shifts, weekends, and public holidays. Because the role involves assisting patients and moving equipment, applicants must be physically fit and able to perform duties such as lifting patients from beds, benches, stretchers, and wheelchairs.

Preference may be given to EPWP trainees, COVID-19 participants, and administrative interns who served or are still serving the Department, in line with Personnel Circular Letter 4 of 2017.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for transporting patients safely within the hospital. This includes moving patients from registration points to various clinical areas and assisting with patient movement between ambulances, private vehicles, stretchers, and wheelchairs.

The Porter will also be expected to transport deceased patients from wards to the mortuary and ensure that the mortuary register is completed accurately.

Other duties include:

  • Assisting with loading and offloading patients
  • Cleaning stretchers and wheelchairs after use
  • Ensuring patient safety during transportation
  • Reporting faulty equipment to the supervisor
  • Making sure equipment is stored properly and available when needed
  • Assisting with mortuary administrative procedures
  • Following correct protocols when dealing with the public and bereaved families
  • Performing any other duties allocated by the supervisor

This role requires compassion, discipline, confidentiality, and the ability to work with patients and families in sensitive situations.
