What You’ll Be Responsible For
As a Cleaner at South African Airways, your main job will be to clean both the inside and outside of SAA and third-party aircraft. You’ll also be responsible for keeping the hangars and surrounding premises neat and organized. Below are some of the daily duties you can expect:
Aircraft Interior Cleaning
- Perform deep cleaning inside all aircraft cabins.
- Clean aircraft toilets, carpets, chairs, cockpits, galleys, and other surfaces.
- Wash and polish screens, headphones, and trash compactors.
- Ensure all waste is safely collected and properly disposed of.
Aircraft Exterior Cleaning
- Use equipment like stackers, scissor lifts, cherry pickers, and skyjacks to clean aircraft exteriors.
- Perform glazing and polishing on aircraft bodies to keep them shiny and well-maintained.
- Wash the entire aircraft exterior following aviation cleaning standards.
Hangar Cleaning Duties
- Sweep and wash hangar floors.
- Clean hazardous spillages such as oil or fuel safely.
- Empty drip trays and handle waste responsibly.
- Operate floor scrubbers and other cleaning equipment.
- Clean mechanics’ stores, basins, and stands.
Premises Cleaning
- Pick up loose papers and debris in technical and operational areas.
- Remove foreign objects like nails, pallets, and boxes.
- Sweep parking lots and streets near the hangars.
- Operate recycling systems, including sorting office papers and compacting trash.
Specialized Aircraft Component Cleaning
- Use approved aviation chemicals to clean aircraft components.
- Perform landing gear washes using specialized machines.
- Deep clean toilet components, chairs, cargo rails, and other removable parts.
- Handle spillages on aircraft or cargo areas safely and efficiently.
This role is hands-on and requires focus, teamwork, and a commitment to cleanliness and safety.
Minimum Qualifications and Experience
To qualify for this position, candidates must meet the following requirements:
- Grade 12 (Matric) or an equivalent qualification.
- At least 6 months of experience in an appearance or cleaning role within the aviation industry.
- Knowledge of SAA Technical Policies and operation of cleaning equipment.
- Understanding of cleaning chemicals and safety practices used in aviation environments.
If you’ve previously worked in a general cleaning or aircraft appearance section, your experience will be an added advantage.
