SANParks is inviting qualified candidates to apply for the General Worker position in the Conservation Department at the Garden Route National Park – Tsitsikamma Section. The successful candidate will report to the Sergeant Ranger and contribute to the protection and maintenance of one of South Africa’s most beautiful national parks. Key Responsibilities
As a General Worker at Tsitsikamma, your daily tasks will include:
- Conservation Duties: Implement programs to manage invasive plants, control alien animals, prevent soil erosion, and rehabilitate affected areas.
- Fire Protection: Support wildfire suppression, conduct prescribed burns, and help prepare fire breaks to protect park property and wildlife.
- Infrastructure Maintenance: Maintain park buildings, roads, hiking trails, footpaths, gardens, tourism facilities, and signage to ensure they remain safe and visitor-ready.
- General Upkeep: Ensure the terrain, gardens, staff villages, and public areas are clean, safe, and well-maintained.
- Forestry Work: Assist with forestry-related duties and basic environmental management tasks.
- Standby Duties: Be available on weekends and public holidays as part of operational requirements.
Additional responsibilities may include operating machinery and equipment like chainsaws and brush cutters, depending on work requirements.
Requirements for Applicants
Candidates must meet the following minimum requirements:
- Education: Grade 12 (Std 10) certificate or equivalent.
- Experience: 1–2 years in general worker roles, preferably in nature conservation (e.g., alien clearing, fire management, or law enforcement related work).
- Licenses: Valid driver’s license.
- Skills:
- Basic knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) practices
- Understanding of general maintenance and inspection procedures
- Familiarity with First Aid
- Chainsaw and brush cutter operation skills
- Ability to operate machinery and equipment safely
- Physical Fitness: Must be physically fit to perform conservation duties.
- Other Requirements:
- Provide own transport to and from the park
- Adherence to hygiene and safety standards
- Knowledge of relevant laws, policies, and procedures
What You Can Expect
This role provides hands-on experience in nature conservation, infrastructure maintenance, and park management. You will gain practical skills in fire management, forestry, and environmental protection while contributing to the preservation of South Africa’s natural heritage.
