The Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality has announced an exciting seasonal employment opportunity for qualified and experienced individuals who are passionate about public safety and lifesaving. The municipality, through its Directorate of Solid Waste and Environmental Management, is calling on interested candidates to apply for Seasonal Lifeguard positions (X35) for the upcoming festive and holiday season.

This initiative is aimed at ensuring the safety of residents and visitors who frequent the city’s beaches during the busy summer months. Lifeguards play a vital role in keeping beaches safe, responding to emergencies, and ensuring that all visitors enjoy a secure environment.

Post Details

  • Position: Seasonal Lifeguards (X35 – Beaches)
  • Task Grade: 6A
  • Salary: R23,990.25 per month
  • Contract Period: 1 December 2025 – 31 January 2026

Requirements

Applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Grade 10 qualification
  • Surf Proficiency Award Certificate
  • Valid retest certificate
  • At least one (1) year of relevant lifesaving experience

Candidates must also be at least 16 years of age or older to qualify.

Key Performance Areas

As a seasonal lifeguard, appointed candidates will be expected to perform the following duties:

  • Rescue drowning persons and respond to emergencies
  • Patrol city beaches by monitoring and checking local conditions
  • Render first aid to the injured and handle necessary injuries on site
  • Operate rescue equipment, including inflatable boats
  • Perform crowd control and Peace Officer duties when required

This is a highly responsible role requiring dedication, vigilance, and the ability to remain calm under pressure.
