Job Summary
The Clinical Nurse (Professional Nurse) is responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of holistic nursing care for patients, their families, and the broader community.
The successful candidate will coordinate patient care as part of a multi-disciplinary healthcare team, ensuring the highest standards of professionalism, safety, and compassion in all aspects of nursing practice.
Key Responsibilities
1. Consistency of Care
- Act as a clinical resource, assisting nursing staff to assess, plan, implement, and document quality patient care.
- Serve as a patient advocate by maintaining clear communication between patients, families, and healthcare professionals.
- Ensure seamless communication between nursing management and unit staff to address care challenges.
- Provide advanced and specialised nursing care in accordance with standard procedures, protocols, and nursing theory.
- Initiate and manage emergency treatment (RESUS) in accordance with scope of practice.
- Conduct patient interviews, gather relevant background information, and evaluate both immediate and long-term needs.
- Participate in ward rounds with physicians to review patient progress and coordinate care plans.
- Prepare accurate shift documentation that reflects patient status, staff ratios, and operational issues.
2. Policy and Procedure Development
- Contribute to the creation and review of nursing policies and procedures to ensure consistent, high-quality patient care throughout the hospital.
3. Quality and Risk Management
- Maintain a safe, clean, and secure environment for patients, staff, and visitors.
- Promote continuous improvement in safety and quality of care while managing resources effectively within the approved budget.
- Evaluate and monitor the safe use of medical equipment and supplies.
4. Teamwork and Collaboration
- Work collaboratively as part of a unified team to achieve departmental and organisational goals.
- Support other hospital departments to ensure seamless delivery of patient services.
5. Education and Training
- Partner with the Clinical Facilitation Department to identify and meet the learning needs of nursing staff and students.
- Assist in planning and delivering in-service training, mentoring, and orientation programmes.
- Provide guidance on emergency procedures and updated clinical practices.
- Keep nursing staff informed of revised hospital policies and procedures.
6. Resource Allocation
- Allocate and manage nursing staff to ensure optimal coverage according to patient acuity and staff skill levels.
- Make staffing adjustments as needed to maintain efficient service delivery.
7. Personal and Professional Development
- Take responsibility for personal professional growth and continuous learning.
- Stay informed on Netcare’s evolving clinical policies, digital health tools, and best-practice innovations.
- Maintain effective communication and positive working relationships with colleagues, patients, and external stakeholders.
8. Digital Innovation
- Support the implementation of digital solutions such as CareOn electronic patient records, e-prescriptions, and clinical stock management systems.
- Promote the use of technology to enhance safety, efficiency, and patient outcomes.
Inherent Requirements
To be considered for this position, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Registered as a Professional Nurse with the South African Nursing Council (SANC).
- In-depth knowledge of general and specialised nursing theory and practice.
- Proven understanding of modern nursing care principles and evidence-based practice.
- Strong communication, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities.
