Umngeni-Uthukela Water is a newly established entity formed from the merger of Umgeni Water and Mhlathuze Water, aimed at delivering efficient, integrated water and wastewater services across KwaZulu-Natal. The organization plays a vital role in ensuring water security, environmental stewardship, and socio-economic development in the region. What is the Water & Waste Water Treatment Learnership?
The Water & Waste Water Treatment Learnership is a structured training programme designed to develop qualified Process Controllers who can operate and maintain water purification and wastewater treatment plants. Learners will receive both theoretical instruction and practical workplace training, aligned with SAQA-registered qualifications.
This learnership falls under the National Certificate: Water and Wastewater Treatment Process Operations (NQF Level 2–4) and is accredited by the Energy and Water Sector Education and Training Authority (EWSETA).
Key Features of the Programme
- Duration: 12 months (2025 – 2026)
- Location: Across UUW plants in KwaZulu-Natal
- Accreditation: Nationally recognized NQF qualification
- Stipend: Monthly stipend provided for the duration of the programme

Who Can Apply?
To be eligible, applicants must:
- Be South African citizens aged between 18 and 35
- Possess a Grade 12 certificate, preferably with Maths and Science
- Be currently unemployed
- Have a strong interest in environmental and technical fields
- Be willing to work at water treatment plants in rural or urban KZN areas
Preference is often given to:
- Candidates from disadvantaged communities
- Female applicants to promote gender equity in technical roles
- Applicants with a background in TVET College technical subjects
