About SANParks (South African National Parks)
The Department of Environmental Affairs is in charge of SANParks, a governmental entity under their jurisdiction. In this department, inclusive conservation, as opposed to past exclusionary policies, is at the heart of efforts to implement policies consistent with the National Development Framework for Sustainable Development and the National Development Plan. The federal government established these two texts to guide the country’s approach to attaining sustainable development. South African National Parks (SANParks) is responsible for administering a network of 19 active national parks spanning throughout seven of the country’s nine provinces.
These parks cover an area of little more than 4 million hectares and are in charge of managing 67% of the state’s protected areas. When it comes to the administration of protected areas and the growth of conservation operations, the current organization, SANParks, is widely regarded as a pioneer in the sector. South Africa has built seven new national parks with a combined area of more than 700 000 hectares during the last two decades. The vast majority of these parks are in less protected biomes, such as the succulent Karoo and fynbos.
